History and Campus

Guided by their vocation and tradition as educators, María Mercedes de Brigard and Leopoldo García decided in 1988 to make their long-held dream a reality: to create a school that would contribute to building a better world. Together with another family member, Lucila de Brigard, whose experience in early childhood education was vital from the beginning, Gimnasio La Montaña welcomed its first group of 65 boys and girls on September 6, in a small colonial-style house.

Since then, year after year, the school has significantly expanded its student community within a purposeful learning ecosystem that transforms limitations into ingenuity and talent.

Unique Differentiator

Phone-Free School

A pedagogical decision to protect students’ attention, relationships, and well-being.

By eliminating mobile device use during the school day, we reclaim space for genuine connection, reduce social anxiety, and maximize concentration on academic activities. The result is a community that is more deeply connected on a human level.

Focus

A deep focus on learning without digital distractions.

Social

Face-to-face interactions that strengthen empathy.

Social Commitment and Sustainability

Two expressions of one fundamental principle: our commitment to our community and society.

Social Commitment

For more than 38 years, Gimnasio La Montaña has educated people who balance academic excellence with human development, fostering each student’s talent in an environment that cares for, protects, and respects their individuality. Our commitment goes beyond the classroom. We believe education also means contributing to the country’s development and creating an impact on society. That is why we promote initiatives such as:

  • Public education through concession: through Alianza Educativa, together with Universidad de los Andes and partner schools such as Los Nogales and San Carlos, we contribute to strengthening 11 public educational institutions, benefiting approximately 12,000 students. The principal of Gimnasio La Montaña currently serves as President of this organization.

  • Commitment to children and adolescents: more than 20 years ago, Gimnasio La Montaña was where Red PaPaz was born, an organization that today supports and protects children, adolescents, and families throughout Colombia.

Sustainability

Sustainability is a cross-cutting pillar of Gimnasio La Montaña’s educational project. We seek to educate conscious citizens who can understand environmental challenges and act responsibly to care for natural resources and build a more sustainable future.

This commitment involves the entire educational community and is integrated into the curriculum through experiences that strengthen environmental awareness, critical thinking, and commitment to the environment.

Key initiatives include the school garden, waste separation and recovery programs, reducing plastic use, promoting the circular economy, and educational activities on biodiversity and climate change.
Through the GLM Sostenible program, Gimnasio La Montaña advances its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting concrete actions that have a positive impact on the community and the planet.
